It’s National Police Week, and Mississippi Congressman Michael Guest is working to ensure law enforcement is honored within the capitol’s corridors.

Guest, a Republican representing the state’s third district, introduced House Resolution 1226 on Tuesday. The resolution supported by both Republicans and Democrats expresses “unwavering support” for law enforcement officers across the country, especially those who have been killed in the line of duty, while also honoring 238 fallen first responders whose stories were recovered in 2023.

“Police officers are the heroes of our community, protecting us from crime and defending innocent citizens from those who seek to do harm,” Guest said. “I’m honored to lead legislation that expresses support for our law enforcement officers and pays tribute to those who have lost their lives in the line of duty.”

Guest’s resolution currently has 86 cosponsors, including Republican Congressmen Mike Ezell and Trent Kelly of Mississippi. This is the latest show of appreciation from Mississippians during National Police Week as events have been held throughout the state, including the Department of Public Safety’s annual Fallen Officers Memorial Ceremony.

National Police Week started in 1962 when President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation that designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. The week is used to offer honor, remembrance, and peer support while allowing law enforcement, survivors, and citizens to gather and pay homage to those who gave their lives in the line of duty.
