As ‘National Police Week’ continues, lawmakers and leaders continue to honor the severe of law enforcement officers across the country.
Congressman Michael Guest (MS-03) jointly introduced H. Res. 383 with Congressman Peter King (NY-02) to recognize National Police Week and to honor the men and women who serve in law enforcement.
Congressman Guest introduced the bill on Peace Officers Memorial Day, a date designated by President Kennedy to acknowledge and honor the sacrifices made on a regular basis by law enforcement members.
“Our law enforcement officers play a vital role in creating safe communities to live, worship, and raise a family. Each day, law enforcement officers across our nation risk their own lives to protect the American public from disaster. Unfortunately, this risk is associated with a cost – the loss of life in the line of duty. It’s vital that this Congress supports National Police Week in order to recognize the ultimate sacrifice our officers have paid in the line of duty and the mission of law enforcement and to celebrate those officers who have made positive differences in our communities,” Guest said.
Congressman King also recognized the importance of supporting National Police Week. “Police Week reminds us to respect and support the ones who protect us from violence and crime,” King said.
On the Senate floor, Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith recently honored Mississippi’s fallen officers.
Earlier this year, Congressman Guest and Senator Hyde-Smith introduced companion bills to rename a Brookhaven post office after Corporal Walter Zachery Moak, Patrolman James Kevin White, and Deputy Donald William Durr – three Brookhaven officers who passed away in the line of duty in recent years.
