A Guatemalan national living illegally in Mississippi has been sentenced to five years in prison after previously being convicted and deported for a felony.
According to court documents, Marcos Perez-Hernandez, 25, was found unlawfully present in Rankin County in May. Back in 2018, he had been deported to his home country following a felony conviction in 2018 for kidnapping.
During his most recent run-in with law enforcement, Perez-Hernandez was stopped by a Rankin County Sheriff’s deputy for careless driving, driving under the influence, and driving with no license. He pleaded guilty to illegal reentry following a state felony conviction in September with his prison sentence being handed down this week.
U.S. Attorney Todd Gee of the Southern District of Mississippi and Field Office Director Mellisa B. Harper of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) made the announcement. The case was investigated by ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Amber Jones.
