JACKSON, Miss.–The prediction from Punxatawny Phil: There will be six more weeks of winter. News Mississippi wanted to know if the groundhog’s Sunday prediction was true for our state, so a call to the National Weather Service was in order.
“Well, actually looking at the pattern, it does favor the potential for another shot of cold air, so there could be more winter weather to come,” said Meteorologist David Cox. He added that the groundhog might not be the best at predicting the weather, though.
Cox said there is the potential later this week, Friday namely, that there could be more wintry weather, including some ice or snow, in the Delta area.
For now, it’s rain predicted again for Tuesday. There may be thunderstorms with that, but the highs and lows are going to be warm enough where you likely won’t see any wintry mix until Thursday night, and that is only in the north part of the state.
As for ice that some people reported seeing in Oxford and the northern counties Sunday, Cox said most of the reports came from Tennessee and that any ice that did fall in Mississippi did not accumulate.
