GREENWOOD, Miss.- Greenwood schools could be in trouble and are looking at a state takeover.
Mississippi’s Commission on School Accreditation is meeting Thursday to decide whether or not a state of emergency needs to be declared for the Greenwood School District, where 2,900 students currently attend.
If decided that a state of emergency needs to take place, that would clear the way for the state Board of Education to ask Governor Phil Bryant to declare an emergency, leading to a state takeover of the school district.
The state would remove the superintendent Montrelle Greene and the school board and appoint a conservator to run the district. The Mississippi Department of Education is questioning employee pay and job descriptions reported by Greenwood School District as well as misspending $29,000 in federal money.
