Both chambers of the Mississippi Legislature cleared the way for Gov. Tate Reeves to give his State of the State address on Wednesday.
Reeves, a second-term Republican, is expected to use the opportunity to tout record economic development and further urge lawmakers to eliminate the state’s income tax, among other topics.
The House of Representatives recently passed a bill with bipartisan support that would phase out income tax in just over a decade’s time while slashing tax on groceries. Reeves has publicly touted the legislation and asked the Senate through a series of social media posts to either pass that bill or draft a tax reform plan of their own, which he hopes would include an eventual elimination of income tax.
In years past, Reeves has gathered in front of lawmakers and utilized the annual address to push his legislative agenda. Topics brought up by the governor last February, in his first address after winning reelection, included public education, infrastructure, and crime.
Reeves will deliver the 2025 State of the State address from the south steps of the state capitol in Jackson at 5 p.m. In the event of inclement weather, it will be held inside the House of Representatives. The Democratic response to the governor’s speech will take place immediately after.
