RIDGELAND, Miss.– A new comer to the start of the holiday shopping season, Small Business Saturday, which also takes place this weekend.
“Everybody is familiar with the big box (stores), we are just trying to bring some attention to smaller businesses,” explained Carla Flahertly of Deep South Scuba, a small business that has operated in the Ridgeland area for nearly 21 years.
And just like Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Small Business Saturday will give shoppers another way to save. “We’ve got some things on sale. The manufacturers have done some rebates and some discount that we can honor, and just do here so the customer does not have to send in certificates of rebates and that sort of thing,” Flahertly explained.
And besides the extra discounts, Flahertly said customers will get the personal attention and services that are the traditional hallmarks of locally owned businesses . “Instead of them having to hunt for something, we are asking ‘Is there anything we can help you with? How are you doing?’ And giving them ideas. Something unfortunately they don’t always get at larger stores.”
Small Business Saturday started in 2010 as a way to encourage consumers to “shop small”, and local, in support of the small businesses in their community.
