CANTON, Miss– Canton Made, Mississippi Proud. That’s the new tagline for the 2015 Nissan Murano. Once those hit the market, Murano becomes exclusively made in Canton.
It was 2003 when Nissan began operations at the factory in Canton. 11 years, 6,100 jobs, and billions of dollars later, Canton Mississippi’s horizons are worldwide as the sole manufacturer for many Nissan styles, including the new Murano.
More than 2.9 million vehicles have been assembled at Canton, putting the annual production rate at 450,000. That’s a number that John Martin, senior vice president of Manufacturing, Supply Chain Management and Purchasing for Nissan North America says is going up.
“We’ll be up to 507,000 vehicles by the 2017 fiscal year,” says Martin at the Murano launch celebration at the factory.
Martin says that also means 85% of the Nissans made in the world will be made in Canton.
Governor Phil Bryant says that this should motivate academic help for those going into career technical fields.
“If they finish high school with a tech prep program and want to go into a community college tech prep program, we should pay for it,” Governor Bryant says that will strengthen the manufacturing workforce in Mississippi. Nissan already has a tuition reimbursement program for certain college majors within the company.
The 2015 Murano goes on sale during early December. Next year production for the Titan begins in Canton.
