JACKSON, Miss.- Excited for the warmer weather but not to thrilled about the pesky insects that come with it? There are ways to protect yourself from bites.
The Mississippi Department of Health has plenty of tips for keeping mosquitoes off of your body and out of your home.
Make sure to take all trash out and don’t let it sit for too long outside. Mosquitoes will congregate there and at any standing water. These are ideal breeding grounds for the insects. Emptying or changing water bowls for pets is also a good preventative measure to keep mosquitoes from breeding in your home.
For outside use buying repelling candles can solve the backyard mosquito problem. MSDH recommends Ortho Flying Insect Killer or Deep 6. These are good for you and the environment.
Keeping mosquitoes off of you is a little tricky at times. It’s a good idea to wear long sleeves and pants if you are in an area with a high volume of them. Also wear repellant like DEET. If you’re sleeping outside make sure to take some kind of netting to cover your sleeping area. Screening windows can prevent the infiltration of mosquitoes into the home.
Always follow instructions when applying any type of mosquito spray.
And if it’s too severe you can always avoid outdoor activity altogether.
