A few months ago, a picture of George Lopez on Belhaven’s soccer field went viral as the famous actor was here in Jackson filming. Now, the movie Lopez and company were working on is out and available for streaming.
How the Gringo Stole Christmas may be set in Los Angeles but a majority of it was filmed in places across central Mississippi, according to Nina Parikh of the Mississippi Film Office. Locations where the movie was shot included Belhaven and the Fondren area.
“Now, this is one of those movies that they’re not trying to be in Mississippi. They’re not even trying to be in the South. This movie takes place in Los Angeles, so you will see some Los Angeles cityscapes, but then when you go to the house or the interior places, those are all filmed in Mississippi,” Nina Parikh of the Mississippi Film Office explained.
The latest holiday flick from Lopez, which centers around his character’s daughter coming home from the holidays with a brand-new boyfriend, is currently one of the top streamed movies in the U.S. as Christmas quickly approaches.
“The movie’s out, and it’s doing great,” Parikh continued. “It’s one of the top ten movies that’s streaming right now.”
If you haven’t yet seen How the Gringo Stole Christmas or maybe you just want to watch it again but in a different setting, Parikh and the Mississippi Film Office will be offering a special screening on Monday, Dec. 18 at Legacy Theaters in Flowood. Showtime is set for 7 p.m. and tickets can be purchased here.
How the Gringo Stole Christmas is the most recent holiday film to be shot in the Magnolia State, joining the likes of A New Orleans Noel (2022), Every Time a Bell Rings (2021), and Christmas in Mississippi (2017).
