An investigation is underway after a Mississippi inmate died this week due to what officials believe was a medical emergency.
Sheriff Mitchell Mixon said inmate Thomas Stringfellow was booked on Dec. 30 into the George County Regional Correctional Facility on a warrant for absentia. The 57-year-old from Lucedale then began showing “unusual symptoms” during the intake process, prompting staff to provide medical attention.
Stringfellow was transported by ambulance to the George Regional Hospital, where further treatment was provided. But despite the efforts, he was later pronounced deceased.
Per state law, an investigation has been launched by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation due to Stringfellow’s passing being on the premises of a correctional institution. The George County Sheriff’s Office is also working with the George County Coroner’s Office and MBI officials to determine the circumstances leading to Stringfellow’s death.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr. Stringfellow,” Mixon said. “The health and safety of individuals in our care is our highest priority. We are fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation to determine the cause of this tragic incident.”
An autopsy will be conducted, but it’s unclear when results will be returned.
