JACKSON, Miss. – Four Mississippi couples are challenging a state law that prohibits same-sex couples from adopting.
The federal lawsuit was filed by the Campaign for Southern Equality.
Mississippi is the only state in the U.S. that bans same-sex couples from adopting children.
Family Equality Council has also joined the case as plaintiffs representing the LGBT community in Mississippi.
The filed lawsuit argues that, “The Mississippi Adoption Ban writes inequality into Mississippi law by requiring that married gay and lesbian couples be treated differently than all other married couples in Mississippi, unequivocally barring them from adoption without regard to their circumstances or qualifications as parents.”
