Gas prices in Mississippi and across the country are rising. With the current statewide average of $2.30 a gallon, Don Redman with AAA says the prices will continue to rise in the coming months, but it might not be a bad thing.
“It’s usually a sign of a strengthening economy,” Redman said. “Anytime an economy grows, so does the demand for energy products like gasoline.”
Redman added that prices typically start to go up this time of year due to the difference in the refinement processes.
“Summer-grade gasoline is less volatile and burns cleaner and it’s also more expensive to refine,” Redman said. “That’s why we see some of those prices going up. We could be looking potentially at gas prices in Mississippi between $2.40 – $2.50 a gallon before we head into the summer.”
He added that as people start to feel the burn in their pocketbook of the higher gas prices they should remember to make sure that the cars are as efficient as possible because the more the gasoline costs, people will have a smaller amount to spend for the rest of their budget.
- Check the tires, make sure they are properly inflated
- Lighten the load, if you’re carrying around dead weight get rid of it
- Try to combine errands to save fuel
