RAYMOND, Miss.–Getting control of the inmates at the Hinds County Jail at Raymond is what law officers from several agencies were working on Monday night, into Tuesday morning after an all-day riot Monday that left one inmate dead.
The Hinds County Sheriff’s Dept. tells News Mississippi that the first wave was about noon Monday. The inmates calmed down, but the gang fight started back up around supper time and escalated.
Sheriff Tyrone Lewis confirmed to media that one inmate was dead and five others had to go to the hospital.
It’s far from the first time that jailers lost control of the facility. There have been different riots over the past couple of years, one where inmates destroyed part of the jail. This has caused county supervisors and others to call for immediate action on building a new, more secure facility.
