March of the Mayors is wrapping up its fourth year, and this time, the food drive put on by Extra Table is statewide.
Martha Allen, executive director of Extra Table, explained that mayors from 51 cities are participating in this drive with each official sponsoring a different donation item with the final drop-off day set for Friday, March 1.
“If you are not familiar with March of the Mayors, we do not have mayors lined up marching,” Allen joked on Good Things with Rebecca Turner. “Each mayor, for four weeks, champions a different healthy, shelf-stable item … March of the Mayors is so special because there’s not a ticket, there’s not a VIP table. Like you can go grab a can of peanut butter, a can of tuna, or whatever your mayor is collecting, and drop it off at a drop-site and pat yourself on the back.”
While the donation period is coming to an end, Allen said they still need volunteers to help pack the thousands of items they’ve already received. Next week, Extra Table will be set up in five regions of the state, preparing donations for food pantries and soup kitchens to pick up.
“Every day next week, Monday through Friday, we’ll be in a different region of the state hosting a packing party,” Allen said. “Those will start every morning at 9 and end around 11:30 or 12, so we’ll do that in Cleveland, Tupelo, Jackson, Hattiesburg, and the Coast.”
