There’s just one day left for Mississippians impacted by April 8-11 severe weather to apply for federal assistance.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is encouraging those who had property damage or were affected in other ways by the storms and tornadoes that hit Hancock, Humphreys, Hinds, Madison, Neshoba, and Scott counties to apply by 10 p.m. CT on Friday, Aug. 9.
Survivors can apply in the following ways:
- Call the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362. If you use video relay service, captioned telephone service, or others, make sure to provide FEMA with your number for that service.
- Go online to DisasterAssistance.gov. Here, you can not only apply for federal assistance but check the status of applications. The same can be done through the FEMA mobile app.
FEMA assistance may cover rental assistance, temporary housing, home repairs, personal property losses, and other disaster-related needs. FEMA grants do not have to be repaid with any assistance being non-taxable and have no effect on Social Security, Medicaid, or other benefits.
So far, over $10 million in assistance has been approved for Mississippians in the aforementioned counties. During the April 8-11 bout of severe weather, 13 tornadoes were confirmed with hundreds of homes and buildings being damaged.
