Freezing Rain Grips North Mississippi, Travel Difficult

JACKSON, Miss. — Residents in North Mississippi woke up to light snow and freezing rain Monday.  Forecasters predicted counties near the Tennessee state line could have on the ground as much as three-quarters of an inch of ice that won’t melt for another day or two.

By early Monday morning, the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) had confirmed ice on roads and bridges in several counties, including Alcorn, Benton, Coahoma, Desoto, Marshall, Tate, Tippah, Tishomingo and Tunica.

Governor Phil Bryant had issued a state of emergency ahead of the weather system; and the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency opened the State Emergency Operations Center Sunday night to monitor and respond to any requests for help.
