JACKSON, MISS– The Mississippi State Department of Health Radon Program is offering free radon test kits for Radon Action Month.
Radon is an odorless, colorless gas and is the second leading cause of lung cancer nationwide. The gas if found in nature and comes from uranium deep in the earth, found in most soils and granite.
In Mississippi, fewer than three percent of homes have radon levels in excess of EPA recommended action levels. Because of the makeup, Northeastern Mississippi is more likely to deal with radon.
To test your home for radon, call the MSDH Radon Hotline at 1-800-626-7739 for a free test kit. It’ll come with instructions on how to administer the test yourself. While the MSDH cannot remove the radon from your home, it can connect you to approved contractors for the job.
For more information on radon exposure, visit the MSDH website at www.HealthyMS.com/radon or call the hotline at 1-800-626-7739.
