A former Mississippi high school bookkeeper has been arrested for embezzlement.
The Mississippi State Auditor’s Office announced on Monday that special agents arrested Memory Smith and charged her with one count of embezzlement. Smith previously worked as a bookkeeper at Quitman High School.
Smith allegedly took cash from the school’s activity fund, pocketing the money for personal use.
“Thank you to our investigators for uncovering this fraud,” State Auditor Shad White said in a statement. “We have a zero-tolerance policy for fraud in this office and we will continue doing the work to make sure that tax dollars are spent properly.”
Smith faces up to $5,000 in fines and 20 years behind bars if she is convicted of the crime.
