LONG BEACH, Miss. – The former Long Beach police officer charged with manslaughter in her daughter’s death has been arrested and released on $50,000 bond.
Cassie Barker turned herself in Thursday after a warrant was issued in the death of her 3-year-old daughter, Cheyenne Hyer. Barker was charged with manslaughter.
Hyer was found alone in the squad car by her mother, Cassie Barker, a former Long Beach police officer, who had been visiting another officer, Clark Ladner. The child was unresponsive in her seat and was later pronounced dead at Hancock Medical Center.
WLOX reported that Barker was visiting her supervisor, Ladner, at his home on Friday Sept. 30 around 9:00 a.m. She left the three-year-old in the car at that time. Barker and Ladner reportedly fell asleep and when they woke up remembered the child. Barker did not call to report the child unresponsive until 1:52 p.m.
As the investigation began Barker and Ladner were placed on administrative leave until they were fired from the department.
Chief Investigator with the Hancock County Sheriff Department told local media they are giving Barker the opportunity to turn herself in by issuing the warrant, however if she does not comply by the end of the day she will be considered a fugitive and will be arrested.
No charges have been filed against Ladner at this time.
