Former Mississippi Teacher Goes Viral for Sock Metaphor Video

CLARKSDALE, Miss. – Teachers in Mississippi are unable to teach students how to properly use a condom, or even use the word condom because of an abstinence based sex-education law that went into effect in 2012. That same year former teacher Sanford Johnson created a YouTube video, filled with innuendos, teaching students how to put on a sock, using it as a metaphor for a condom. This week the video has gone viral, receiving over one million views and appearing on websites Reddit and Buzzfeed.

Sanford Johnson is currently the Deputy Director for Mississippi First, a public policy nonprofit company that promotes comprehensive sex-education curriculum. According to Mississippi First, Mississippi has the second highest rate of teen births in the nation and the second highest rate of chlamydia and gonorrhea infections in the nation.
