Former Jackson Airport Authority CEO Carl Newman has passed away from a battle with blood cancer at the age of 68.
Newman served in Jackson from 2015 to 2019. He began his work in aviation as an operations administrative assistant in Phoenix, Ariz. in 1980. He held many roles in the aviation department, eventually becoming the assistant aviation director.
After retiring from the City of Phoenix in 2012, Newman and his family relocated to Houston, Texas where he accepted the position as the general manager of the George Bush Intercontinental Airport.
He remained in Houston until the CEO position at JMAA opened up, bringing Newman to the Magnolia State.
After resigning from his position with JMAA in 2019, Newman accepted the position of aviation director for the Glendale Municipal Airport in Arizona. He remained in this position until his health would no longer permit him to work.
Over the course of his career, Newman received numerous accolades. Some of his major accomplishments include serving as the first Black individual to chair the American Association of Airport Executives Executive Committee. He was also appointed to serve on the National Infrastructure Advisory Council by former President Barack Obama in 2017.
