A Flash Flood Watch has been issued in several Mississippi counties as fears are rising over the Arkabutla Dam on the Coldwater River failing soon.
The watch, which is in effect until Wednesday afternoon, is for the following counties:
- Coahoma
- DeSoto
- Quitman
- Tallahatchie
- Tate
- Tunica
- Crittenden (Ark.)
- Lee (Ark.)
According to the National Weather Service, now is the time to prepare and be ready to implement a flood plan.
“During a flood, water levels and flow speed can quickly change,” officials with NWS said. “You are safest by staying indoors or seeking higher ground if shelter isn’t available. If you’re stuck outside when a flash flood occurs, do not attempt to cross flood waters by vehicle or on foot.”
Residents have been warned to stay away from the Arkabutla Dam as it is undergoing emergency repairs.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers stated that it had found “potential breach conditions” at the dam, prompting an urgent operation.
