DESOTO COUNTY, Miss. – Governor Phil Bryant has declared a state of emergency in Desoto County as a result of Thursday’s severe storms and flash flooding.

Desoto County leaders signed a local disaster proclamation earlier that day asking for the State of Mississippi’s help to recover.

Several cities , including Southaven and Horn Lake also declared states of emergencies after fast moving waters washed out dozens of roads and damaged homes.

Deputy Director of Emergency Management, Josh Harper, said Southaven was the hardest hit.  “We probably rescued over a hundred people out of (Savannah Creek Apartments) alone; with a few dozen dogs, cats, you name it,” he said. Some people in several subdivisions were also evacuated.

Desoto County and the American Red Cross opened a shelter for those displaced residents at a Southaven Church.
> Residents are urged to take pictures of their damage for insurance purposes.
