VICKSBURG, Miss.–It’s a statistical increase in fires when it gets cold, but firefighters are still trying to figure out what caused the fire that damaged or destroyed at least ten rooms at the Best Inn in Vicksburg Wednesday night.
News Mississippi listeners saw the flames and took video. There were only two guests in the motel and firefighters made sure they were out and safe while they battled the fire for about two hours to get it under control.
It started in a downstairs room, and spread quickly.
Meanwhile in Bay St. Louis, a family is out of a place to sleep after a fire took their home early Thursday, just after midnight, reported WLOX.
When firefighters got there, the entire front of the house was burning. They got it under control in about a half hour and the house is still standing, but everything inside is ruined.
The State Fire Marshal’s office tells News Mississippi that fire hazards grow in the colder months when people try different dangerous methods to heat their homes.
Never leave a space heater unattended or on when you leave the house, or even leave the room.
Never use a stove to heat your house, or any other kind of open flame or open heating source.
Always make sure any flammable materials are well away from any heating source.
