A firefighter has been confirmed dead and a woman is behind bars following what appears to be a domestic-related shooting in Mississippi’s capital city.
Police report that 49-year-old Gerald Bates, who worked with the Jackson and Byram fire departments, was shot and killed at a home on Ferguson Road on Sunday morning. Officers discovered Bates dead after responding to a call concerning a man being unresponsive.
Upon arrival at the scene, authorities discovered that 41-year-old Tammy Williams had barricaded herself inside the residence. She is also accused of shooting Bates.
Williams, who was allegedly living with Bates, is said to have ignored commands while walking around the home with a gun. A S.W.A.T. team was eventually called to the location. S.W.A.T. officers released tear gas into the home and were able to take the subject into custody.
No responding law enforcement are reported to have suffered any injuries during the incident. A dog in the house was killed because it had reportedly demonstrated hostility toward officers.
