JACKSON, Miss.- Hinds County is fighting off any attempt by the state to control the Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport.
Currently the City of Jackson controls operations at the airport. However that could be changing if authorities from the State want to oversee things. Hinds County District 1 Supervisor Robert Graham told WAPT that this would negatively impact money for Hawkins Field in Jackson, the original site which relies heavily on the airport.
State Senator Josh Harkins says he will push a bill through in the next few weeks of legislature that would give control of the airport to the state and governors office. He says a tri-county authority would oversee it.
The bill would allow for Gov. Bryant to select a board of individuals to oversee the airport, versus the current status in which the City of Jackson is managing it.
