JACKSON COUNTY, Miss. — You will not be able to see any of the letters written on behalf of Ex Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd that were sent to a federal judge in Alabama before Byrd was sentenced to six months of house arrest. That sentencing came after Byrd plead guilty in to getting another officer to erase a tape of him kicking a handcuffed man in the groin.
The Sun Herald newspaper augured it was the public’s right to know what was in those letters. After denying the paper’s request, the judge said nothing in the 50 letters written to him influenced his decision, and releasing the letters could have the potential of harming the judicial process.
