JACKSON, Miss.–Chances are if you live in Mississippi that you have a Family Dollar in your neighborhood. The stores head office announced Thursday that 370 stores will close and the chain will shift its focus back to dollar items, cutting prices on about 1,000 items on their shelves.
The move is to help offset a drop in earnings from last year, which the company’s CEO Howard Levine told investors were down last quarter and last year because of excessive cold weather and a drop in purchases from low-income customers, which have traditionally been the store’s primary clientele.
For you this means if you work at Family Dollar you could learn soon that your job may go away. There are 56 Family Dollar stores in Mississippi that are listed on the company’s website. The company did not say if or how many Mississippi stores would close.

There are about 8,000 Family Dollar stores nationally.
For you this also means you’ll see the price on some of your favorite items in the store go down.
The best selling items at Family Dollar right now are tobacco and frozen foods.
The items that saw the biggest declines were clothing, electronics and home products.
