TUPELO, Miss.–Wrap pipes, wear layers this afternoon and especially tomorrow morning. The extreme cold is almost here and Mississippi will not be spared the arctic air.
Places in north Mississippi could be as cold as 7 degrees Thursday morning. Central Mississippi could be as cold as 12 and as far south as Hattiesburg it could be as cold as 15.
Hard freeze warnings were in effect for much of the state already Wednesday morning.
National Weather Service Meteorologist Phil Baker said north Mississippi will see the arctic cold front arrive this afternoon.
“Tupelo will be down to 30 degrees and Oxford down to 27 or 28 by noon,” said Baker. “Winds will be sustained at 20 to 25, gusting to about 30 mph.”
He said that’ll bring the afternoon wind chills to the teens and finally to about 10 by evening. Late evening they could be as low as 2 degrees.
For Thursday morning there will likely be single digits.
“We’re forecasting 7 degrees for Tupelo, for example.”
He said the winds will die down over night, but it will still feel like it’s in the single digits.
