HATTIESBURG, Miss– The Children’s Center for Communication and Development at Southern Miss is making sure that teachers and therapists working with children with special needs have the tools they need to encourage language development.
Imagine your child not being able to speak or communicate the way everyone else does. You’d want the best therapy and education for your child so they can develop and learn to communicate with their different abilities. The Children’s Center for Communication and Development at Southern Miss is making sure that your kid’s teachers are ready to deal with any special circumstances they may face.
The Exceptional Learners, Exceptional Instruction Workshop, set for October 2-3rd, is an opportunity for teachers and therapists to get the tools and methods they can utilize when working with children with developmental and language disorders.
Sarah Case-Price is the Director of Children’s Center for Communication and Development. She says the kids in her school are all different and range from infancy to 5 years old.
“They all have a language disorder of some type,” says Case-Price.
Case-Price notes that the true purpose of this workshop is to make sure these children are engaged in their therapy and education. They’re promoting getting these kids with special needs on the right track to learning using different toys and materials.
“We’re looking to find the best motivator for children who aren’t motivated,” says Case-Price, “we’re teaching them how to play to promote language learning.”
Sometimes the students are non-verbal or have severe disabilities, so it’s hard to gauge just how much they are learning.
“Most school districts with kids in the pre-school range may have 10 or 14 kids in the group,” says Case-Price, “we’re wanting to help them find what works not just for the kids individually, but as a group.”
The workshop will also identify materials needed to help educate children with different disorders.
Exceptional Learners, Exceptional Instruction is going on October 2-3rd at the Thad Cochran center at Southern Miss in Hattiesburg. For more information or to register, you can go to their website.
