JACKSONVILLE, Fla. A former Mississippi University for Women President has been killed in a car accident in Florida.
James Stobel, 80, was a passenger in a van that was hit by a tractor trailer Wednesday. He died at the UF Health in Jacksonville. The driver of the van, Wayne Richardson, 75, was hurt too and remains in the hospital in serious condition. Florida Highway Patrol said Richardson failed to yield to the tractor trailer when he made a turn.
Stobell served as president of The W from 1977-88. During his tenure, the Columbus based university began admitting men.
