Even Knowing Troopers Were Out for Usual Holiday Meet, Greet and Enforcement; Motorists Responsible for Thousands of Tickets and Grieving

JACKSON, Miss. – Traffic crashes on state roads that are watched by the Mississippi Highway Patrol killed two people over the Memorial Day Weekend.

Sunday, Kattie Howard, 17, of Coldwater couldn’t control her Jeep on MS 305 in Tate County.  “The vehicle left the roadway and collided with a tree.  The driver was pronounced dead at the scene,” explained Lt. Johnny Poulos, with the Mississippi Highway Patrol.  Poulos said Monday, Angeline Wess, 61, of Meridian lost control of her car in Neshoba County.  “The vehicle left the roadway and collided with a tree.  The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.  Both fatality crashes remain under investigation by MPH.”  Those accidents were among 124 total statewide.

Troopers used a big wad of paper over the four day holiday weekend, sending drivers on their way with 5,051 tickets statewide, including 551 for breaking  the seatbelt law.  They took into custody nearly 150 people for DUI, drug possession and felony crimes.

The holiday enforcement period ran Friday through midnight Monday.
