JACKSON, Miss.- It’s tax season and you may be getting ready to file your taxes, but there’s a chance there’s some extra money you could get back that you may not even know about.
Entergy and United Way are helping working families who qualify for the federal Earned Income Tax Credit get refunds of $2,500 or more through Super Tax Day events.
There will be a free Super Tax Day event at the Jackson Medical Mall and at the RC Irwin Public Library in Tunica Jan. 31 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. There will also be other events throughout the tax season at local VITA sites, volunteers certified by the Internal Revenue Service will help residents determine if they qualify for EITC and provide free tax preparation.
The program helps families or individuals who earn $52,400 or less in 2014. For a list of VITA sites, visit entergy.com/eitc.
“More than 476,000 Mississippians qualify every year for this tax credit. Over 70,000 don’t even claim these credits leaving nearly $200 million in our federal treasury.” Mara Hartman Spokesperson for Entergy says, “It doesn’t just benefit that Mississippi family, it benefits the entire state because people get this money back and they may use it for a down payment on a house or pay off big loans or even use it to pay their bills.”
Based on income and the number of children in the household, qualifying working families can get back as much as $6,000.
