JACKSON, MISS– A senate bill is emerging for the third time in the legislative session, with hopes of driving more money into the classroom.
Senate Bill 2069 proposed by Senator Joey Fillingane, reads that the salary of the State Superintendent of Education shall not exceed that of the Governor.
Current state superintendent Carey Wright’s current base salary sits at $307,125. If this bill were to pass, effective July 1, 2016, her pay could not exceed that of the governor. The current base salary for the governor in the Magnolia state is $122,160. That’s a nearly $185,000
This bill in similar fashion has been proposed and died twice before; once in 2011 and again in last year’s legislative session.
Chairman of the Senate of the Education Committee Senator Gray Tollison says that money not spent on administrative salaries could benefit the classroom.
“Savings that we can find and put in the classroom go a long way,” Tollison says, “if we keep administrative costs down and put the money into the classroom where children are being taught.”
