Following a two-year investigation, a Mississippi police chief has been indicted on one charge of aggravated assault related to a shootout.

The DeSoto County District Attorney’s Office issued a release on Friday, announcing Drew Chief of Police Terry Tyler had been indicted. The incident in question involved a September 2022 confrontation that escalated into gunfire and caused public concern.

After a review of evidence – which included witness statements, forensic analysis, and police reports – a DeSoto County Grand Jury issued the indictment against Tyler on Thursday.

“This indictment demonstrates our commitment to holding everyone accountable under the law, regardless of their position,” District Attorney Matthew Barton said. “No one is above the law, and the integrity of our legal system demands that we address misconduct wherever it is found. We trust the legal process will reveal the truth, and we will continue to pursue justice in an impartial and thorough manner.”

Tyler will now await an initial court appearance, followed by arraignment and possibly bond. A date for when that will take place was not included in the release.
