CANTON, Miss.–Accepting bribes is the charge and Louis Smith, former Canton alderman, says it was not bribe money he was taking when he was video taped by FBI informants in 2012. His trial was expected to continue Wednesday in federal court.
Affiliate reporter Jerry Lousteau, of WMGO radio, said he sat through the first day of testimony and that the jury saw Smith at a public park north of the Canton Square accepting a stack of $100 bills.
The tape was clear and Smith admitted he was on it, but the defense claim was that the money was a campaign donation.
Smith was arrested by the feds on the night he was defeated as an alderman last year.
