HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Hattiesburg residents are donating money to help their zoo replace two Chilean flamingos that died last week after one of them was stolen during what police have called a fraternity scavenger hunt.
The Hattiesburg Zoo is not officially asking for money, but the Hattiesburg Convention and Tourism Commission confirms that several people have already made substantial donations to buy new flamingos.
A Southern Miss student, Devin Nottis, is accused of taking one of the exotic birds. Zoo workers said the flamingo and its mate were hurt during an apparent struggle with Nottis One had to be euthanized and the other died a day later.
