Dangerous Miss. Highways: Mother, Daughter Killed in Wreck, Florida Man Ejected

WALTHALL COUNTY, Miss.–Mississippi highways were deadly for several people this weekend. A wreck early Sunday killed a mom and her daughter in Walthall County.

That wreck happened about 2:30 Sunday morning on Hwy. 27, said a spokesperson for the Highway Patrol.

The car being driven by 26-year-old Gena Smith, of Ruth, was headed south and crossed into the northbound lane, hitting a pickup head on. Smith died at the scene and her daughter, who was not ID’d, died later.

Trooper Benjamin Boyd said Smith was not wearing her seat belt.

He said the driver of the truck made it out with only minor injuries.

In a separate wreck in Covington County, Saturday afternoon, Trenton Bass, of Florida, was killed on Hwy. 49 when his car flipped and he was thrown out. Bass was also not wearing his seat belt, according to troopers.

Three other people had to be taken to the hospital in Hattiesburg.

In DeSoto County, in the town of Walls, Susan Woodgate, 36, was hit and killed when she was walking along Hwy. 61 Saturday about 10 p.m.

The driver left the scene, but turned herself in later. The MBI said Kierra Tumblin, of Houston, Miss., turned herself in about 2:30 Sunday morning. She was being questioned, but no charges had been filed.
