A Mississippi man is in custody after an early morning confrontation with police turned violent.
Crystal Springs police officials say 35-year-old Maurio Evans was “belligerent” in the early morning hours of Saturday, Feb. 22, as he tried to enter the Crystal Springs Police Department through the building’s front door.
An officer confronted Evans, leading to a scuffle with multiple officers. Investigators say Evans forcibly struck one of them in the face with a brick, causing serious injury.
Evans was subdued after the brief altercation and arrested on charges of aggravated assault on a police officer, simple assault on a public official (dispatcher), resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct.
Authorities did not comment on the officer’s current condition.
He was denied bond in his initial court appearance.
