MADISON, Miss.- The Madison Police Department has received reports of credit card skimmers at the Texaco/Kangaroo Express Gas Station on Highway 463 in Madison.
However, the Brick City isn’t the first place to be hit by the scammers. Skimmers have shown up in Pearl, Clinton, and on the Coast.
Investigators in Madison said that gas station attendants checked the pump and found a credit card skimmer on the credit card transaction terminal.
A second device was located on another pump at the same gas station. Both are being processed as evidence. Both skimmers are similar to those being used in a skimming investigation in Jackson.
Pumps across Madison have been checked by officials and, at this time, no other devices have been found.
John O’Hara with the Better Business Bureau said these skimmers are becoming more and more common and customers need to be aware of what they’re swiping their card into.
“A lot of gas stations have a seal tape, if you see that tape has been broken and a new seal hasn’t been replaced you really want to notify the gas station,” said O’Hara.
“Skimmers are ribbon like devices with a wire that are plugged into the internal components of a gas pump. Most people won’t know that something is wrong, but this device is recording your credit card data,”said Police Chief Ford Hayman of Clinton.
These scammers are often sitting 20-30 feet away with a computer recording your personal information. Hayman said that most gas stations in Clinton have also been checked for skimmers.
