Craigslist Scam Ends With Texas Man in a Mississippi Prison

OXFORD, Miss.–Using the name of a dead Mississippians to trick people into sending him money was the scam. Now John Wiggins, 52, of Round Rock, Texas, will spend his next five years in Mississippi, in prison.

Atty. Gen. Jim Hood said Wiggins used Craigslist under the name of the dead man to advertise a 2003 Ford F350 truck, which did not actually exist. A person from Colorado and a person from Oklahoma were scammed and sent Wiggins the money.

Wiggins pleaded guilty this week to fraud and got the five years to serve, plus was ordered to pay back the money, $3,500.

“Our office is committed to making the internet a safer place for all of us to work and play,” said  Hood.  “I appreciate Judge Gregory for handing down the maximum sentence for this crime.”

The case was prosecuted in LaFayette County because that is where the dead man was from whose name was used.
