NEW ALBANY, Miss.–A check for $5,000 is some of the proof that State Auditor Stacey Pickering’s office is offering that Union County Coroner Mark Golding has been defrauding taxpayers. Pickering acknowledged an on-going investigation Thursday afternoon and Golding stepped down.
The county coroner’s position is elected, meaning he’s ultimate accountable to you at the polls. His resignation came as Pickering’s office, which told media Wednesday they do not comment on on-going investigations, issued a press release detailing some of the alleged wrong doing.
“The State Auditor’s Office is investigating Mark Golding for issuing false claims and invoices to Union County that he investigated deaths within the County and received payment for those claims,” said Pickering in the news release. “Investigators found that Golding submitted false invoices to the Union County Board.”
County coroners are paid per death case they investigate.
Pickering said that $5,000 payment check was seized from the Union Co. Chancery Clerk’s office.
