The Corinth community is mourning after a student was killed in a Monday morning car crash.

The crash happened on County Road 408 in Alcorn County, per a report from WTVA. The Corinth High School student, identified as 17-year-old Callie Pounders, is said to have struck a tree after her vehicle left the roadway. She later died at a local hospital.

“It is with great sadness that I inform you that one of our students, Callie Pounders, was killed this morning in a car accident,” Corinth High School Principal John Barrett said. “We are heartbroken by this loss, and we grieve with the student’s family and friends.”

Barrett added that counselors will be available to students and faculty impacted by Pounders’ death for the remainder of the week.

“In times like these, we must continue to come together and support each other as the Corinth community,” Barrett continued. “We are deeply saddened by this loss and will make every effort to continue to look after and care for one another.”

Pounders, a senior, was a star on the Corinth High School softball team. She led the Warriors to an MHSAA 5A title with a 2-0 sweep over East Central earlier this year. Pounders pitched all 14 innings of the championship series, striking out 20 while allowing just four earned runs.

She also was a member of the volleyball and powerlifting teams.
