SMITH COUNTY, Miss. – It is not typical that lawmen get put in the same jail as the people they arrested, but that is not the case in Smith County. Over the weekend Smith County Constable Dennis Jones was arrested for a domestic violence charge according to Smith County Sheriff Charlie Crumpton.
“He was picked at the Smith County Sheriff’s Department and was being transported to the Jasper County Jail since he is a law enforcement officer in the county,” said Sheriff Crumpton. “We don’t put another law man in mixed population if we can help it for his own protection.”
On Saturday Jones pulled away from deputies before getting into jail. He was captured again around three hours later hiding inside a vacant building in Bay Springs.
“We tried to put him in a safer environment over there, but apparently he didn’t want to be there.”
Jones is being held on charges of destruction of county property, domestic violence, and escaping.
