After a teenage girl’s body was found by the River Walk in Columbus on Saturday evening, the victim’s ex-boyfriend is being charged with murder.

According to the Columbus Police Department, the case was originally thought to be an accidental shooting but has since been changed to a homicide investigation.

Officers responded to reports of a gunshot victim on Moores Creek Road by the River Walk. Law enforcement discovered Abria Harris, 18, with a gunshot wound to her head. She was pronounced dead on the scene by the Lowndes County Coroner’s Office.

Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant reported that earlier Saturday evening, a 911 call was received from a man who said his friend was playing with a gun and accidentally shot herself. The case was turned into a homicide investigation after Harris’ body was found.

Harris’ ex-boyfriend, Dietrix Cunningham, is being charged with murder in connection with the case. Cunningham, 20, is currently being held at the Lowndes County Detention Center amid the ongoing investigation.
