A Columbus city councilman is being investigated for his alleged role in an armed robbery at a local Waffle House.
Police told The Commercial Dispatch that Ward 4 Councilman Pierre Beard was outside the restaurant and seen interacting with the culprit on June 25 when two people were robbed at gunpoint.
“Yes, [Beard] was there, along with 30 to 40 other people that we’re currently bringing in,” Columbus Police Chief Joseph Daughtry explained to the local newspaper. “We have to talk to everyone, from the cooks to the people that were out there, to make sure our case is rock solid.”
Quavis Shawnterris Betts, 28, was later arrested at La Quinta Inn across the street, allegedly trying to enter a hotel room booked under Beard’s name. Betts was charged with two counts of armed robbery.
Daughtry added that security guards were on the scene at the Waffle House but chose not to contact law enforcement.
“You know what really bothers me? We had two security guards out there, and they didn’t do a thing. They didn’t even call the police.”
As of now, no charges have been brought against Beard. The councilman has not responded to a request for comment from SuperTalk Mississippi News.
