CANTON, Miss.- A clergy prayer vigil and press conference were held Thursday at the Nissan plant in Canton.
Concerned clergy are pushing for worker’s rights at the plant. They had a petition signed by 100 Mississippi faith leaders they gave to Nissan leaders.
Horace McMillan a pastor for Open Door Mennonite Church and member of the 100 member clergy group said, “We want the workers to have the right to decide for themselves, in a free and fair election, without retaliation, without threats, without intimidation, whether they want a union or not.”
The group had intentions of addressing these issues with Nissan, but was turned down for a third time when they asked for the meeting at the front entrance.
The group has expressed concerns with pay, safety, and fairness and hope the hearts and minds of Nissan leaders regarding their treatment of the workers will change.
