MADISON, Miss. — Christmas on Ice in Madison has been going strong since around Thanksgiving and since it’s outdoors they deal with the elements.
This year’s ice rink is double the size of last year’s and now sits at over 14,000 square feet with two ice slides to boot.
But because of the frequent rain lately the operation has shutdown a total of ten days, which is the same amount they were closed for the entire season last year.
“For me it’s actually in the 50’s,” said Event Director Steve Hutton referring to the perfect temperature for them. “You can almost skate in short sleeves but it’s going to get down in the 30’s at night at we can rebuild it.”
The ice is kept at seven inches so even temperatures into the 70’s can be dealt with as long as it isn’t like that for several days.
“Our max temperature is about 80 degrees,” said Hutton. “But we don’t have to shut down if it’s just an anomaly 80 degree day because of how thick the ice it.”
Hutton said so far they’ve only had two really good days as far as crowds because of the weather, even though both of those days were higher than any other one-day crowd from last year.
He said that shows once the weather starts to cooperate and the kids get out of school they will be back into the large crowds soon.
“We close on January 5th and that’s the day before the kids go back to school.”
