JACKSON, Miss.–Today your child’s school gets a report card. The accountability ratings have been released by the Miss. Dept. of Education and this year there is a sharp jump in the number of schools getting an “a” rating.
There were 18 school districts that got an “a” this year. Compare that to the previous years. There were only three in 2012 and four in 2011. According to the Dept. of Education website, 97 out of 151 districts got a “c” or above.
More schools got a “c” than any other grade.
In assigning the letter grades, the Dept. of Education uses the “QDI” , or quality distribution index, score, a number system where points are assigned based on performance. The higher the QDI, the better the school’s rating.
The department also uses different graduation rates for rating certain districts. It is explained on the website that some districts use a five-year grad rate, while others use a four-year, whichever gives them the highest QDI score.
The report uses data like state test scores and graduation rates to grade districts. Yazoo City and Tunica County had some of the worst graduation rates. Each dof the two was graduating just over 56 percent of students.
